Mmmmh, I love how you characterised all the boys and while my favourite was Javert when I started, the one that I feel closest to is Jamie. I think you really did q great job with him, especially considering that he is a secondary character in his media and you managed to make him a layered, complex character.
But they're all great and deserve a hug and a cookie for their progress ^^
Since there's no "I love them all!" option, I have to go with Jareth, because I loved his movie long before I ever even knew the others existed. (Yes, I'm old enough to actually remember the movie when it was new-ish. Hush.)
Before I started reading this comic, Javert was the only one I hadn't heard of. Having said that, I have only seen the 2004 Phantom of the Opera film but I do remember rooting for Erik. Now I've seen Les Mis (thanks mostly to your efforts). Can't say I was ever attached to Jamie until I read this comic.
So now I'm pretty sure it goes: Jareth, Jamie, Erik and Javert in that order. I remember seeing Labyrinth when I was very young and all I took away from it was that he really needed to fix his hair.
I have a particular affinity for Jamie, Jareth is incredible, but oh Javert. Seriously, I managed to somehow fall in love with Javert without ever having read the book, without ever having SEEN a single Les Mis performance (but having heard his songs on a cast recording), and his stint in Roommates has only made me love him more.
Well when I originally began this comic a year ago it was because of Jareth first of all, and Erik was close second. After reading both your comic and Pika's, I've really started to enjoy James (who's completely adorable and I never thought of him that way in POTC) and Javert (who I knew was in Les Mis but that about covered it). So all in all, I really have to go with Jareth since he got there first and continuously makes me laugh (and fangirl yes, )
That's... a really hard choice. I mean, I like all of them. Possibly Eric least, since after reading the original book I've never been able to completely get over the whole psychotic killer thing, but I have to say I love what you've done with all the characters. I think James (honest, brave, occasionally clumsy) is easily the most likable, while Javert tends to build respect over time as we watch him deal with hard choices and moral conundrums. Jareth is... Jareth. Not particularly likable or respectable, but so much fun to watch (as long as he's happening to other people!) Eric is a developing character dealing well with a relationship that didn't work out... Really, I didn't know who I should vote for, so I picked James 'cos he's so likable.
I love them all but had to pick Jamie b/c I'm a hopeless romantic and hated what happen to him in the movies! I found this and GND b/c I was looking for pics from Labyrinth. And now I'm hooked! Keep up the great work!!
I must first confess something: there is a permanent disconnect in my head. I love your comic, I love Pika's spinoff comic. I love pretty much every single thing you both do, I love the way you explore psyches and What A Hero Is and What A Villain Is and the themes of redemption and friendship and love and high silliness and the perfect one-liners... But ALL of it has absolutely one hundred percent NOTHING to do with the movies, TV shows, books, and what-have-you that all these characters originally came from. I've gone back and watched The Labyrinth, Phantom of the Opera, and quite a few others regarding various secondary characters. The people on the screen are part of their respective worlds; they are not part of this one. I can watch Pirates of the Caribbean as many times as I like, and I will never once think "Oh no, Jamie!" It may have to do with the visual medium. Even when Pika has Srs Moments and the artwork becomes more realistic, it still is her interpretation of the character and not David Bowie in makeup. The comics I love so much are rigidly separate from their sources, and there's not much I can (or will) do to change my own mind about that.
ALL THAT BEING SAID...
Jareth will be highly displeased to hear he is hands-down my least personal favorite. I enjoy watching him being put through his paces, being forced to grow as a character. And I enjoy watching him interact with Sarah. ; ) But as a stand-alone, apart from the stories, just as a person? Not so much. I never went for the arrogant types, even the ones with a vulnerable side. (another example: Barney Stinson. Love watching him! But he is NOT my favorite character.)
Erik seems to have withdrawn from the spotlight as of late. I'm trying to remember a storyline revolving around Erik that does not also include Christine... Or hijinks with Jareth. Ah! The mysterious phone! I think... I like Erik best when he is not being angry or passionate. I love love love his interactions with Sarah. If he were to be the common-sense friend in MY life, I'd promptly fall in love with him. (That's a preference. I understand it is not a popular one.) Also, his romance with Blind Mag is PERFECT. They are equals, they respect each other and have common ground. It's so gol-darned healthy that if they made a sitcom out of their relationship it would get cancelled after the pilot episode. Well, unless the zany cast of characters surrounding the lovers appealed to enough viewers. ; ) And all this doesn't begin to touch on the lovely coincidence of her literal blindness to his physical faults. (guess who I ship? *ahem* moving on.)
James is... adorable. It was a gradual shift to woobie, I think (had to look that up), but then it suddenly got played up a lot. I love hugs as much as if not more than the next person, but inflicting pain specifically to comfort afterwards is a disturbing notion. (Not saying you do that, Ashe! Just, that's the trope definition.) What *I* adore and admire is his nobility of character, but also the way he shakes his head at his neighbors - at least when they feud. Again, here is someone I would love to have as a friend, who I could rely on to do the right thing but also to make snarky comments with me when everyone else is being overdramatic.
The only character whose movie(s) I haven't seen yet is Javert, yet I've known about Les Mes for years longer than some of the other characters have even existed. *coughJamescough* I knew Javert's literary role going in to this comic. I expected the hard-ass, tough-as-nails, by-the-book mentality. In fact, he is so rigorously the straight man I figured he'd throw up his hands and move out rather than deal with all the silly, crazy, occasionally criminal foofarah that constantly goes on. (I also figured he'd be so obstinately stick-in-the-mud that he would spoil everyone else's fun, including the readers'.) I was pleasantly surprised to see cracks form, to see some softness under that perma-stern expression. (well done on the pacing for that, by the way. It was even more gradual than Jamie's woobie-ness.) I was more pleasantly surprised to learn that even Javert can be the good guy sometimes. He taught me more about forgiveness - and forgiveness of self especially - than all the other characters combined. Also, well, this is kind of embarrassing but I can't resist his wolf motif. ; b
So who is my favorite character? I've already said not Jareth. The truth is, I wrote all this out in hopes that I would learn who it is myself. I think I'm further from the answer than ever. I love Erik, Jamie, and Javert. Perhaps not for the reasons everyone else does, but since when does that matter?
If someone could tell me who is getting the least amount of love up there in the actual poll, I'll vote for him. That way I will be allowed to see who everyone else voted for, too.
I suppose I'll vote for - no, he has a solid fanbase, so I'll - but he got a revamp two months ago, so lots of people love him now, i guess it would have to be - but that doesn't work either! Fine. Erik must be feeling somewhat neglected lately, what with all the hubbub about Javert's new look and Jamie's fanclub giving him attention. I vote Erik.
I refuse to answer this poll on the basis of, um, my vote should be fairly obvious, and.... I worry this is going to have some Clap Your Hands If You Believe-esque repercussions on your meta/What Is Story plotlines and I can't have that on my conscience...
I can't choose! (Except for I just voted for Jamie, 'cause he's such a sweetie & so cute & really brave too--not that the others aren't--askdfl the longer I think about it the less sure I get...) I love 'em all so much! Why would you ask such an evil question?
