Roommates 73 - Signs by AsheRhyder Roommates 73 - Signs by AsheRhyder
A new year, a new arc. Not to worry; those who showed up before the new year still have a lot to do.

Ah, subtext. You are going to be our good friend over the rest of this arc. Please feel free to ignore subtext if this isn't your particular cup of tea.

Javert belongs to Hugo, Boublil, Schonberg, and Kretzmer.
??? belongs to ???.

Wow, it'll be awkward for Javert to see Aziriphale any time soon after a dream like that... Or maybe one of the dream angles just stole his sword.

Javert...

Possibly a bit of mood whiplash there in the lash panel, but maybe that's just my imagination... We''ll see what exactly comes of this. Also, the shading here is REALLY GOOD. Wow.

You'll find that there's quite a bit of mood whiplash in the series. It's a favorite of mine.

I had this crackfic-esque idea that made me feel oddly better. I put Aziraphale in that lineup of angels.
I don't know exactly what happened. Azira's attention was piqued for some reason. There was a bit of dialogue. (I would like to see (hear?) a conversation between those two, it would be pretty interesting.)
I like to imagine Javert getting a chance. I want to believe he did. I hold tight to that hope, though it is of the fictional world, beyond me in so many ways and by such great measures. I hold on to it as if I could give it to him myself.
What are we supposed to assume happened? I am more than halfway through the book and I am enjoying it greatly, but this question has been there since square one and now that I am in 1832 it's making me impatient for the closest thing I will ever get to an answer, which is pages away... and I might not accept it anyhow.

I'd love to read that dialogue, if you ever felt like typing it out.

I rather imagine that Javert had the chance to defend himself, and chose not to. He owns up to his mistakes; in fact, he demands punishment for them. The book... yeah. The book hurts...

1. Challenge Accepted. It will be some time before I feel I understand them both well enough to do them justice, but when I do, this will happen.

2. He demands punishment- is there not something in that itself to make one hope that he would not be punished for eternity? That is what I am talking about, though I have difficulty speaking or even typing to the point about it. You might understand why. It comes down to this: I want to trust that he was not sent to Hell. I want to believe in ineffable mercy, which he may not deserve by human standards, but again, what is the meaning of mercy? (Besides "something Javert was absolute zero at.") I also want to know who allowed this fictional character, all but my polar opposite, to steal my thoughts, to fascinate but also distress me profoundly and repeatedly. He also happens to be part of a monumental work of art which is already changing my life and altering my view of the world. As Olivier said he "never ceased to think about Hamlet at odd moments," so it will be for me with Les Miserables, and there he will be, always a challenge. If I must think him cursed I am not sure what I will be able to think at all.

1.) I look forward to reading it!

2.) My operating theory is that, while he would insist that he does deserve damnation for his failure, there would be a part of him that would flinch from it now. (Now being at the end of the story.) It knows that there *can* be mercy, ineffable mercy, and that maybe, just maybe he can have that too. But he's afraid that it won't come, or worse, that it will and will reject him, so he does what he knows best and demands punishment. To paraphrase the lyrics, he reaches but falls, and the things he has served and loved have all failed him. It makes the sense of tragedy all the sharper.

There's sadness in his eyes here, and his fear and suffering show, because he still hopes. In the comic, at least, there are now people willing to catch him.

That makes perfect sense, and as such it kind of tore me apart again- which is not at all your fault, it's just what I was talking about with "profoundly and repeatedly". Once again I thank you for gracing me with a thoughtful reply. One of these days I hope to know someone who knows and loves these characters as I do- in the meanwhile everything runs rampant in my mind and more of it ends up in these comments than is by any means sensible.

On a completely different route.

It greatly amused me even more when a few of my friends did a concert version (which made no money and technically didn't happen) in that their Javert and Valjean were dating.

*snickers*

Surprisingly though, there was no additional tension between the pair, but it still amused me.

I really like this strip. Do you play Kingdom Hearts by any chance? The middle panel looks like Roxas from the Second game falling through the water at the opening clip.
