Letters like Y, C and W have no runes

For the curious.
We covered it in literature once. It's an amazing poem. The child cries to his father as they ride through the woods that he can see the Alder King, the father protests that it's just the wind, shadows, trees... and it does no good, the child is murdered.

Not someone you want your baby brother to meet.
I love that Jareth is protective of Toby, I imagine he would be fond of the child he stole away for a few hours, even outside of loving Sarah.

Translation.
"Ah, my son the disappointment. So this is where you have been hiding."
"Such a pity. This is what you are reduced to? Your mother made you weak. I can make you strong..."
"So ungrateful. Such a pity. you have so much potential..."

I knew learning to read runes would pay off some day but I didn't think it would be like this.

Just out of curiosity, how DID you think it would pay off?? Got some treasure-hunting planned or something equally Indiana Jones/Laura Croft?

this is a good one. kali-balekrone.deviantart.com/…
there are a lot of different variations. this ^ isn't exactly like what has been used but it's a good middle ground for everything I've come across. it isn't really hard to work out what the different letters are with practice. just learn that and it you should be able to read most runes you come across.

Erlkonig is from Scandanavian myth/folktales, most popularly known because of a poem by Goethe that's been adapted numerous times and ways. It describes a father and child riding out at night, and the child is lured and eventually killed by the Erlkonig, an 'elf-king' or 'alder-king', depending on what translation and research you use. It's rather old, but easy to find with a little research.

Es ist der Vater, und seinem Kind...

I always thought Jareth was more of an elfking than a goblin king, what with all the child-snatching.

I'm probably not the first to translate this, but:

Jareth:iconsaysplz:There is nothing for you here, ErlKonig.
ErlKonig:iconsaysplz:AH, MY SON THE DISAPPOINTMENT. SO THIS IS WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN HIDING. SUCH A PITY. THIS IS WHAT YOU WERE REDUCED TO? YOUR MOTHER MADE YOU WEAK. I CAN MAKE YOU STRONG...
Jareth:iconsaysplz:I know you, and I know this game. It won't work on ME.
ErlKonig:iconsaysplz:SO UNGRATEFUL. SUCH A PITY. YOU HAVE SO MUCH POTENTIAL.
Jareth:iconsaysplz:Enough. I'll show you 'potential'. And then you will leave the boy alone. DO. NOT. TOUCH. HIM.

Wow, it has been a long time since I tried to read runic. Thanks for today's brain stretch. It did throw me off a little that you use the double-lined Hagalaz instead of the single that I was somehow expecting. (used to write my class notes in futhark for fun....)

got a lol out of me again when I spotted "such a pity". XD

Is it just me (could be as it's hard to tell with his monochromatic eyes) or does the Erlkönig an Aside Glance in the 6th panel. As self-aware as this comic is the characters don't seem to know "where the camera is" normally. :D

They don't tend to acknowledge it at least (but they definitely know it's there somewhere... Jareth's "If you can read this..." underwear on the 4th page is enough proof).

And at least this is the only possible Aside Glance I remember. :D

If he's anything like Prince Nuada, in King mode, and as overly obnoxious as Jareth is, I can probably guess that he's saying something about how Jareth poses no threat to him.

About half of his lines are mildly-taunting, and a half of the remaining may just be quoting Labyrinth back at him...

Okay, so he's not Thranduil, a specific elven king, but STILL. He could be Thranduil's evil twin brother.

I'll just let my bubble float up out of reach of pokers.

Also, just discovered this comic yesterday. This is brilliant. I absolutely love it. Great job! ^___^

Not sure if this has already been translated, but here's my go at it (had to write a verse from Kalevalah in runic in 4th grade and got a bit obsessed with runes) :

Panel 4: "Ah, my son the disappointment. So this is where you have been hiding." Assuming the Mannaz was supposed to be an Ehwaz in 'the'

Panel 5: "Such a pity. This is what you are reduced to? Your mother made you weak. I can make you strong..."

Panel 6: "So ungrateful. Such a pity. You have so much potential..."

If it were actually in Norse, it would have taken a lot longer. It's just the basic alphabet reapplied as phonetically as I was able, so it didn't really take too long. Runic used to be a hobby of mine.

Huh, and here I thought it was Anglo-Saxon. No wonder I was having issues with some of the letters, because I was like, "This doesn't make sense!" XD I can read Anglo-Saxon pretty well, but it seems like some of the letters are different. The "o" you used, for example, I'm used to seeing it mean "ee" or something like that. *shrug*

By the way, sorry I'm spamming your inbox. I fell out of touch with your comic when my friend reminded me of it, so I'm playing catch-up. ^_^
